Inside the Shiretoko World Heritage area, in a zone normally closed to people. Infrared camera and microphone, monochrome after dark. Ezo deer, brown bears and foxes move at night here — sightings are luck.

Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, known for exhibits built around how animals actually behave. The stream restarts daily and moves between enclosures — wolves, seals and penguins all turn up.

Aqua World Ōarai in Ibaraki, known for its sharks. This camera watches the sand tiger shark tank, streamed by TV Asahi's news channel.

A university research forest on Tokyo's western edge, above 600 m. Colour by day, infrared at night. Sika deer, macaques and Asiatic black bears have all been filmed here, though nothing is guaranteed.

iZoo in Kawazu on the Izu Peninsula, a zoo devoted to reptiles. This camera is on the outdoor giant tortoise pasture; the tortoises come out to wander when it's warm.

Nihondaira Zoo in Shizuoka, watching the polar bears — two of them, named in the stream's title: Rossy and Vanilla.

Satsukiyama Zoo in Ikeda, Osaka, free to enter. This camera watches only wombats — the channel bills itself as the world's only wombat live stream.

The African elephant yard at Kumamoto City Zoo and Botanical Garden, from a fixed camera. The giraffes next door are a separate point.

Three Masai giraffes. The zoo's savanna area has been under reconstruction since November 2025, so they and the elephants cannot be visited in person — which is exactly why these cameras exist.

The meerkat exhibit at Shoushan Zoo in Kaohsiung. Meerkats are out by day and in their burrows at night, often with one standing guard. After closing the enclosure is empty.

Xiaohong, the Bengal tiger at Shoushan Zoo. It is a 360° camera, so drag the picture to look around for her. At night the picture goes dark.

The beluga pool at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium in Pingtung, filmed underwater. The lights go off at night and the picture turns black.

The panda enclosures at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, on iPanda's fixed camera. Expect bamboo, and a great deal of sleeping. After dark it plays highlight reels, not the live view.

An open-range zoo on Melbourne's western edge, laid out like African savanna. This camera watches the lions, who sleep most of the day and are liveliest around dawn and dusk.

The giraffe habitat at Melbourne Zoo, home to a family of five including two calves born in 2025 and 2026. Giraffes spend about sixteen hours a day eating.

The outdoor snow leopard enclosure at Melbourne Zoo. Snow leopards come from the high mountains of Central Asia, and their coats blend into rock, so look carefully.

The penguin pool at Melbourne Zoo. Keepers give the penguins a health check every morning, and afternoons are mostly spent swimming.

An uninhabited subantarctic island, days away by boat, watching an erect-crested penguin colony. They winter at sea and come back in the southern spring. At night the picture is infrared.

A nest box in the Marlborough Sounds. The same little blue penguins as Oamaru, but from inside the burrow — two eggs right now, which the host expects to hatch in late September or early October.

Little blue penguins — the smallest in the world, about 30 cm tall. They spend the day at sea and come ashore together around dusk.

The tip of the Otago Peninsula — the only place northern royal albatrosses nest on New Zealand's mainland. The camera follows one nest and is run by the Department of Conservation.

Midway Atoll in the middle of the North Pacific, the world's largest Laysan albatross colony. The albatrosses return around November and leave in summer.

Wildlife artist Robert E Fuller's cameras on his Yorkshire farm, watching barn owls, kestrels, tawny owls and stoats — all of them wild.

An osprey nest in Poole Harbour on England's south coast, part of a project returning ospreys after some 200 years. They're here spring to summer and winter in West Africa.

A beaver lodge on the National Trust's Holnicote Estate in Somerset. Beavers were released into this fenced valley in 2020, some 400 years after they vanished from the area.

A little owl nest box in Tiszalök, north-east Hungary. Little owls stand about 20 cm tall and, unusually for owls, often sit out in daylight.

A house martin nest in Siófok on Lake Balaton. They breed here in summer and winter in Africa, so the nest stands empty from autumn.

The falls on Anan Creek in south-east Alaska, one of few places black and brown bears fish the same stream. The salmon run, roughly July and August, is when the bears come.
